Sharing the Love: Nonprofits Need More Help Than Ever

by Debby Hampton

Oklahomans have a history of giving generously in times of need.  When natural disaster strikes or when money is tight, many Oklahomans have received a helping hand from a family member, neighbor, church or nonprofit organization, or know someone who has.

Whether unemployed, underemployed, or merely worried about job security, it seems that just about everyone has been impacted by the current economic downturn.   State enrollment in the food stamp program is one barometer of Oklahoma’s economic health.  More than 442,000 Oklahomans received food stamps in December, and state officials expect that number to continue to climb this year.

Not surprisingly, many charities across the country are coping with a steep decline in donations just as the need for their services spikes. We are seeing the same trend locally. For example, monetary donations for relief efforts after the Feb. 10 tornadoes in Lone Gove and Edmond were considerably lower than for similar disasters in the past.

But not all the news is grim.  Local charities encountered some unexpected good fortune recently.

In honor of its 45th anniversary, Oklahoma City-based Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores announced an initiative called “Making a Difference from the Heart.”  The initiative gives every corporate employee $450 to donate to the nonprofit organization of his or her choice in the greater Oklahoma City area.  Employees have until mid-April to make their donations.  All told, “Making a Difference from the Heart” will direct approximately $165,000 to Oklahoma City charities on behalf of Love’s employees.

The program will make a difference in the lives of many people who depend on the outstanding and compassionate services provided by Oklahoma City nonprofits.

In this economy, it is more important than ever to show support for the charitable organizations that help so many in our community.  Love’s “Making a Difference from the Heart” initiative is an outstanding example of corporate leadership during this challenging time.  Though it has grown to be one of the largest privately owned businesses in the nation, Love’s remains grounded in its Oklahoma heritage and values.
